99 Points James Suckling
This is a young wine with terrific depth and layers of fruit. It’s full-bodied with notes of eucalyptus, lavender and sage and hints of matchsticks and oranges. It’s linear and tight at the end, with an energetic finish. Very Saffredi in nature. Better than the 2021. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot and 10% petite verdot.
98 Points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
This is one of only a handful of wines made on the Tuscan Coast that has managed to interpret the vintage in such an excellent manner. The Fattoria le Pupille 2022 Saffredi deftly plays upon the elegance and fruity brightness of the growing season, while also harnessing its freshness and its slightly more streamlined appeal. The wine is nuanced and layered with fine details that recall wild berry, spice, blue flower and blood orange. To my mind, the 2022 stands apart from almost every other past vintage of Saffredi. This is a new direction for the wine that we can all happily embrace.
98 Points Decanter
Menthol-infused dark berry flavours open the door to an intense and juicy mouthful of precisely crafted red and black berries and cherries. A wonderful savouriness and finely integrated tannins round off the package. The Saffredi 2022 is the result of the winery's hard work, which has paid off. Elisabetta Geppetti's son Ettore - who is only in his third vintage managing the winemaking without the experienced hand of former consultant Luca d'Attoma - has interpreted the vintage wonderfully. He tells me that, unusually, the team needed three harvests at different times to achieve the freshness that the wine displays. It's an amazing wine. Wow!
Winemaker Notes
Nestled in the heart of southern Tuscany, Fattoria Le Pupille is a winery with a story as rich as its wines. For centuries, the land was known for its cork oaks and sprawling wheat fields—a beautiful but unheralded landscape. That is, until Elisabetta Geppetti arrived on the scene. Born with a passion for wine, Elisabetta didn’t just inherit a piece of land—she saw what others didn’t: the extraordinary potential of Maremma.
Back in the 1980s, when she was still a student, Elisabetta spent summers at her family’s house in the region, watching over the rolling hills and wondering why such a beautiful place wasn’t yet known for world-class wines. So, she took action, and in 1987, Fattoria Le Pupille was born. She faced skepticism from everyone who couldn’t yet see Maremma’s true potential—but Elisabetta never wavered. With grit, a bold vision, and a little bit of Italian passion, she began planting vineyards where there were none before, bringing new life to this stunning land.
Fast forward to today, and Fattoria Le Pupille has become one of the most influential wineries in Maremma and all of Tuscany, with over 75 hectares of vineyards, producing over half a million bottles each year, and with a global presence that spans four continents. And at the heart of it all is Saffredi—the wine that perfectly captures the essence of this region and Elisabetta’s relentless drive to express Maremma’s unique terroir.
When you drink Saffredi, you’re not just enjoying a 99-point wine. You’re drinking a piece of history—a wine that embodies the heart and soul of Maremma, crafted by a woman who believed in this land when others didn’t. Elisabetta’s vision, combined with the unique climate and terroir of Maremma, has led to a wine that’s rich, bold, and unforgettable.
