96 Points James Suckling
This is a round and quite juicy young wine with notes of blackberries, chocolate and grilled meat. Full and complex with very fine tannins that are well integrated and a bright finish. Lively on the finish.
95 Points Wine Enthusiast
Intensely savory at first, with topsoil, graphite, leather, then fresh and floral with crushed sage and lavender, before wild cherry and wild strawberry emerge. Black cherry notes are generous and bright on the palate but with deep, brooding earth tones as a contrast. Tannins are refined but with tensile strength, like good armor, and a warm but bracing salinity carries through a long finish.
93 Points Wine Advocate
The organic Il Borro 2020 Il Borro (in a heavy glass bottle) is a big-boned Bordeaux blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The wine shows a lot of oak that comes off as toasted spice, coconut or buttered almond. There is a distant note of dried dill, probably in the pyrazine family of the Cabernet Sauvignon, but it dissipates within the context of the big, ripe black fruit at the core. From a hot vintage, you get a lot of richness and fruit weight.
93 Points Wine Spectator
Though luscious and concentrated, this red is also light on its feet. Flavors of plum, blackberry, boysenberry and fruitcake abound, accented by iron and spice notes, with a hint of wild herbs. Firm tannins line the finish, yet this reveals fine harmony and a lingering aftertaste. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Best from 2025 through 2037.
Winemaker Notes
Overall intense and concentrated with aromas of cherry, green olive, chocolate, cedar, leather, and tobacco. Mouthfeel is consistent & well-integrated with soft tannins. Pair with short rib pappardelle or roasted boar with Tuscan sauce.
