Blend: 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot

96+ Points The Wine Independent

The 2019 Lagrange is composed of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it skips out with youthful, vibrant notes of wild blueberries, black raspberries, and crushed blackcurrants, followed by hints of camphor, lilacs, and smoked meats. The medium-bodied palate (13.5% alcohol) delivers beautifully defined black fruit and perfumed layers supported by fine-grained tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing long and mineral-laced. It’s temptingly approachable right now, but that touch of gravitas in the subtext suggests a far greater experience to come following 5 to 7 years of cellaring patience.

96 Points Jane Anson

Inky, glass-staining in colour, this is richly textured and intense, easily rivaling the best ever vintages at the property. Filled with creamy damson and cassis fruit, with a sense of precision and restraint to the frame, held in by fine but plentiful tannins. 30% 1st wine, highest ever Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% new oak for ageing. An exceptional wine, marking 125 years since the founding of Suntory in Japan. Eric Boissenot consultant.

95 Points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2019 Lagrange has turned out beautifully in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, blackberries and cassis mingled with hints of loamy soil, pencil shavings and bay leaf. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with an ample core of lively fruit, powdery tannins and succulent acids, it's suave and seamless, concluding with a long, expansive finish. The result of an extremely rigorous selection, and incorporating fully 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is the finest wine this château has produced in the modern era. Remarkably, it was released at the same price en primeur as the 2005!

95 Points Jeb Dunnuck

While I don't think the 2019 Château Lagrange matches the 2018, it's not far off, with a more elegant yet still concentrated style. Beautiful crème de cassis, spicy oak, tobacco, chocolate, and new saddle leather notes all emerge on the nose, and it stays tight, compact, and focused on the palate, with plenty of firm tannins. It opens up beautifully with time in the glass but merits 4-6 years of bottle age, and it should evolve for 20-25 years or more.

95 Points Vinous

The 2019 Lagrange has an open-knit, classic Saint-Julien nose with black fruit, chimney soot, tobacco and a light sprinkling of white pepper. There is a little more earthiness here. The palate is understated and fleshy, gentle grip, more approachable than its peers, pure but without the same grip and backbone on the finish. Very seductive.

94 Points Decanter

A touch more 'old-school' than many of the other super-glossy, rich and concentrated wines, the 2019 Lagrange has loads of floral notes, blackcurrant/menthol character, fine tannins and a cooling, fresh finish. 13.5% alcohol here, yet no shortage of concentration. Only a third of the estate's wine made it into Lagrange, with 80% Cabernet Sauvignon adding almost a Pauillac style to this St-Julien. Remains a relative bargain for the quality level.

94 Points James Suckling

Aromas of blackcurrants, sandalwood and rose petals. Medium-to full-bodied with linear tannins that are racy and refined, yet forceful. Fine tannins at the end.

94 Points Wine Enthusiast

This full-bodied wine is open in style, with lashings of rich black fruits alongside dense tannins. This is a wine for some long-term aging.

93 Points Wine Spectator

Juicy and flush, with steeped red and black currant and plum fruit flavors, this has a generous edge from start to finish. Features notes of tobacco, singed cedar, warm earth and iron throughout, with a seductive hint of incense curling around the tail end of the finish. This has a generosity that makes it approachable, but there's no rush at all to drink this one.

Winemaker Notes

The 2020 is a vintage of contrasts, a vine grower's vintage. They harvested the smallest crop in 30 years. The extraordinary freshness in this wine, produced the hottest vintage in modern history, is real proof of the buffer effect of their terroir. The precision of the fruit transpires with lovely notes of black cherry, black currant, and licorice. The tense tannic structure is reminiscent of the great 2010, with a more creamy, smoother mid-palate. A truly classic vintage that will be enjoyable earlier yet maintain a remarkable aging potential. A focused, finely tuned expressive wine showing great purity.
