96 Points Wine Spectator

Lovely cherry, raspberry and floral aromas and flavors are at the heart of this graceful red. Vibrant and elegant, with well-integrated tannins and a long, supple, mineral-tinged finish. This should be really charming in about 5 to 6 years. Best from 2025 through 2043.

95 Points James Suckling

Aromas of black cherries and citrus with some graphite and smoke. Medium-bodied with firm, juicy tannins that are chewy now, but will soften with age. Racy and long at the end. From organically grown grapes. Better after 2024.

Potent and concentrated aromas develop in the 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Coltasala, with notes of tobacco, black raspberry, and licorice that are all well-intertwined without showing signs of maturity. The wine is full and long on the palate, with tannins that are ripe and contribute to its long-lasting structure. Notes of plum, tea leaf, and fresh turned earth round out this fantastic wine from Volpaia. Hold it a few years and drink 2025-2040.<!--more-->Located just to the north of Radda, Volpaia is a walled village dating back to the 12th century. The estate owns 46 hectares of vines, at elevations between 450 and 600 meters above sea level. As a founding member of the Chianti League (Lega del Chianti) in 1250, they have been associated and included in the territory of Radda. The ownership and operations are run today by Carlo Mascheroni and Giovannella Stianti Mascheroni along with their children, Nicolo and Federica. Lorenzo Regoli has held the position as winemaker and vineyard manager since 2000, having previously worked at Livia Felluga in Friuli in the northeast.

94 Points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The organic 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Coltassala is 95% Sangiovese with a tiny 5% touch of Mammolo, aged in barrique for 18 months and 12 months in bottle before its release. Production hits 9,000 bottles in this vintage. The wine shows medium-rich fruit weight with a nicely medley of creamy black fruit, Christmas spice and crushed stone or granite. The wine is fruity and contemporary at the same time.

91 Points Decanter

Savoury and gamey on the nose more red fruit with sweet herbs on the palate. Very concentrated with lots of intensity and good acidity.

Winemaker Notes

The Coltassala has a vivid ruby color. This is a well-structured, complex wine with an elegant nose and hints of vanilla, cacao and fruit.
