Drink: 2026-2050

98 Points Kerin O'Keefe

Alpine herb, pressed rose, new leather and black tea aromas lead the nose on the superb Montefico 2019 Riserva. Showing the impeccable class and intensity this cru is celebrated for, it’s youthfully austere but also incredibly savory. The firmly structured palate delivers ripe red cherry, raspberry compote, licorice, almond liqueur and saline mineral notes accompanied by a firm backbone of tightly-woven, close-grained tannins. Bright acidity gives it great aging potential.

97 Points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

This wine knocks it out of the park. The beautiful Produttori del Barbaresco 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico delivers a lovely combination of perfectly ripened fruit, spice and etched mineral. Those qualities transfer to the palate, where the wine shows elegantly chalky tannins. It finishes with power and concentration that is attractive but never overboard. This wine stands out for its impeccable balance.

95 Points Wine Enthusaist

Each sniff open another door to this fragrant wine. At first aromas of sour red berries pop out of the glass, followed by a bouquet of rose, then whole cloves and long pepper corns. Polished with cherry jam and wild herbs at its core as the tannins direct the attention to the earthy and mineral driven finish. Drink 2026 onward.

93+ Points Vinous

The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is one of the most searingly tannic wines in the range. Readers will have to be patient with the 2019, as it is going to need time. As always, Montefico is a Barbaresco built on linear intensity more than size. In 2019, the qualities are quite accented. Time in the glass opens the bouquet nicely, but the 2019 remains quite closed.

Winemaker Notes

Experience the vibrant character of Produttori del Barbaresco's Barbaresco Montefico Riserva 2019. A Nebbiolo capturing the essence of the Montefico vineyard, with notes of red fruit, spice, and a subtle earthiness. A perfect pairing for hearty Italian cuisine.

Montefico Vineyard - "The Academic"

A not widely known vineyard, yet highly sought after by the Barbaresco aficionados.

It is often compared to the slightly larger and more famous Montestefano vineyard because of the similar soil (high calcium) and close proximity between the two. It lays half way between the Montestefano and the Ovello. Exposure is full South, therefore quite warm, but it is not unusual for Montefico to have brisk morning hours during the growing season because of the cooler northern wind that occasionally funnels in from the Tanaro River and into the narrow valley between the villages of Barbaresco and Neive. Austere when young and somehow less fleshy than Montestefano, it shows a beautiful mineral finish. It produces wines with the breed of any classic Barbaresco and with incredible complexity behind the tannins. First vintage released was 1970.
