97 Points Wine Spectator
Expressive flavors of ripe cherry, raspberry, pomegranate and rose are offset by thick, dusty tannins and accents of wild herbs and menthol in this fresh, layered red, which stays vibrant throughout, with a long aftertaste of red fruit and savory notes. Shows excellent aging potential. Best from 2029 through 2048. 3,333 cases made, 500 cases imported.

The expressive 2021 Brunello di Montalcino opens with an array of crushed violet and lavender tones before giving way to citrus-laced blackberries and cherries. Cool-toned and wickedly fresh, it possesses a solid core of mineral-infused wild berry fruits and blue and purple inner florals that arch throughout. Sweet tannins frame the finish beautifully as hints of balsamic spice and pomegranate linger incredibly long. The 2021 is a radiant beast in need of taming. It's hard to put this glass down.

The Lisini 2021 Brunello di Montalcino opens with pretty fruit led by a touch of candied cherry that sits front and center followed by lifted aromas of wild plum sweet earth and pressed blue flower. I like the aromatic intensity and snappy fruit-forward personality of this wine which immediately draws you in. While the attack is generous and expressive there is clear power and structure on the back end that give the wine depth and shape. This is a production of 40000 bottles. I met with proprietor Carlo Lisini Baldi on a chilly January morning with the piercing Tramontana wind blowing in from the north. When I asked how long his family has been making wine in Montalcino he replied simply “We’ve always been here.” In fact Lisini is the third-oldest winery in Montalcino with documented family roots dating back to the 16th century. The vast forested estate encompasses 165 hectares in total including 27 hectares of vineyards and five hectares of olive trees spread across multiple sites with varying elevations and soil types. Near the winery along the Strada di Sesta lies the 1.3-hectare Ugolaia vineyard planted in 1984 and likely to be renewed in the near future. Set on a sunny plateau open on all sides Ugolaia sits at 350 meters in elevation on reddish clay soils rich in iron and aluminum benefiting from constant light and gentle breezes. The estate is now presenting its Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Severo sourced from the family’s newest vineyard planted in 2009 on a high slope rising 520 meters above sea level. Rooted in rocky soils with clay and well-draining sandstone this vineyard highlights a fresher high-elevation expression of Sangiovese shaped by slower ripening and pronounced diurnal shifts
