94 Points James Suckling
The fresh and floral nature of this wine is more than evident, with black cherry and orange undertones. The palate is medium-bodied and refined, with silky tannins and mineral highlights. Tangy and crisp at the end. Drink now.
93 Points Kerin O'Keefe
Blue flower, sandalwood, cassis and culinary spice shape the nose on this lovely red. All about finesse and youthful tension, the savory, elegantly structured palate features juicy Morello cherry, coffee bean and star anise framed in taut, fine-grained tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced and focused.
91 Points Decanter
First produced in 2010, Ama was conceived following the estate’s extensive replanting project. Winemaker Marco Pallanti decided to bottle the younger, more productive vines separately from older plantings – the latter go into the San Lorenzo Gran Selezione. The 2022 is full of youthful vim. Scents of cinnamon, red plum and dark cherry percolate on the nose, and red rose lurks in the background. Medium in weight, it offers a mouthful of cherry pits and gravelly stones inflected with white pepper. Very juicy, peppy acidity joins a light, chalky tannin frame.
91 Points Vinous
The 2022 Chianti Classico Ama opens with a burst of dark red cherry/plum fruit. Vibrant and generous, with bright acids, the Ama is an absolute delight. Its forward personality and impeccable balance make it a fine choice for drinking now and over the next decade or so.
91 Points Wine Spectator
Cherry, raspberry, leather, earth and tobacco flavors converge in this broad, savory red. Tightens up, with the sinewy tannins leaving their mark on the finish. The fruit returns, so give this a little time. Sangiovese and Merlot.
Winemaker Notes
The Chianti Classico Ama di Castello di Ama was born in the vineyards located on the hills between Gaiole and Radda in Chianti, in the heart of the Chianti Classico.
It is mainly produced with Sangiovese and Merlot grapes, rigorously harvested by hand around the beginning of September. After sorting, the grapes undergo a crushing and de-stemming process, before being macerated for about 15 days. After the malolactic fermentation the wine is assembled and placed in second passage barriques for about 12 months.
It is characterized by a bright red color with dark ruby reflections. The nose opens with elegant hints of ripe red fruits, enriched with pleasant spicy notes. It is harmonious and fresh on the palate, with a persistent berry aftertaste.
Perfect to accompany red meats, game and first courses based on meat sauce, it is ideal in combination with cold cuts and aged cheeses.
