Chave’s 2023 Hermitage is elegant and expressive, well suited to the character of the vintage, revealing aromas of sweet dark berries, incense, violet, dark cherries and tapenade. Full-bodied, satiny and suave, deep and concentrated, it’s pure and seamless, built around ultra-refined tannins for such a young Hermitage, with lively acidity lending tension and freshness, concluding with a long, perfumed and persistent finish. Remarkably accessible in its youth, it nonetheless warrants extended cellaring; the particular profile of the vintage appears especially well adapted to this cuvée and should permit long aging while preserving its aromatic expansiveness

A tasting of constituent barrels suggests this will be a particularly approachable and supple vintage of Chave's Hermitage - it is a vintage without great tannic mass or strong acidity, but has deliciously ripe Méal fruit. Very elegant, if fairly low in tannin compared to a typical year, this will drink well young, starting at around 2036 really, but will be approachable, if less rewarding, earlier than that. It will drink before the 2022, and probably not last as long.

As always, I was able to taste the 2023 Hermitage from multiple parcels, and it's clear this will be another beautiful Hermitage. The Péléat, which comes from sandier soils, is always more finesse-oriented. The Beaume lieu-dit brings more complexity and spice, the L'Ermite more minerality and rose petal nuances, and the Bessards always brings the granitic, graphite, structured core that defines this cuvée. I love the overall purity, elegance, and finesse of the 2023, which is a slight throwback to ripe, yet very classic, mineral-driven examples of Chave's Hermitage. It will offer some early enjoyment given its ripe style, yet the minerality and structure all point to it having ample longevity.

Winemaker Notes
Jean-Louis Chave is the standard-bearer in Hermitage, and his wines are highly sought-after by collectors. This is a very promising vintage that is young now yet excellent for its youthful structure. 100% Syrah. Immensely complex on the nose, red fruits, dark chocolate, cassis, toasted spices, cured meat, fresh cracked pepper, and turned earth light up the senses. The palate is concentrated, deeply complex, and full of plush red fruits. The elegance of this wine is unmatched with firm acidity, fine tannins, and a finish that goes on for minutes.
