Drink Window: 2029-2059
100 Points Jeb Dunnuck
The finest example of this estate I've ever tasted, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a flat-out sensational effort that hits perfection. Exhibiting a deep purple hue as well as a smorgasbord-like array of cassis, scorched earth, chocolate, and spicy wood, it has a Pauillac-like cedar pencil character, full-bodied richness, and voluptuous, a layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and sweet tannins. While there's considerable structure, it's concealed by the wine’s extravagant fruit, richness, and opulence. This prodigious, sensationally pure, heavenly Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years and will have another three decades of overall longevity.
Winemaker Notes
The 2021 Staglin Cabernet Sauvignon showcases all the highlights of this celebrated vintage. Brooding aromas flow from the glass evoking dark purple fruit, mocha, mint, and supple leather. Refined but powerful tannins provide the backbone while black currant, sun -warmed fig, licorice and savory herbs entertain the senses. As the wine gracefully tapers to a close, dark chocolate, cedar, and crushed lavender linger. With the natural structure and intense concentration of the vintage, this 2021 benefited from an additional six months in barrel before it was bottled. The low yields of the 2021 vintage delivered fruit of exceptional quality. A lack of moisture defined the growing season, counterbalanced by relatively even temperatures. The result of this fortunate combination was intense flavor throughout the vineyard and record small berries & clusters. Ideal end of season conditions allowed harvest decisions to be made entirely on development of the fruit, rather than concern for upcoming heat or rain events. The grapes were picked in the cool, early mornings to preserve their natural freshness, acidity and delicate flavors.
