Tasting Notes
Saint-Hilaire Blanquette de Limoux Brut 2023 is a historic sparkling wine from the Limoux region of France, recognized as the oldest sparkling wine, first crafted by Benedictine monks in 1531. Made primarily from Mauzac (90%), with small additions of Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay, this wine is produced using the traditional method, ensuring fine bubbles and elegant complexity. It opens with aromas of green apple, pear, and almond, leading to a crisp and refreshing palate with bright citrus, creamy texture, and lively acidity. The finish is clean and elegant, making it a perfect pairing for seafood, poultry, and soft cheeses, or simply enjoyed as an aperitif.
History of Saint Hilaire
Blanquette de Limoux is probably the oldest sparkling wine in the world. We know that in 1531, the Benedictine Monks of the Abbey of Saint-Hilaire were already producing Blanquette de Limoux which certainly makes it France's Oldest Sparkling Wine preceding Champagne by more than a century. The Limoux vineyards are located in Languedoc, in Southern France, at the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. The grapes are selected from clay-limestone plots that capture both the Oceanic and Mediterranean influences.
