95 points Vinous

Full, bright-rimmed violet. Highly fragrant cherry and black raspberry scents, along with suggestions of pipe tobacco, olive, peony and baking spices. Juicy and energetic in the mouth, offering concentrated red and blue fruit, floral pastille, smoky bacon and spicecake flavors that become sweeter on the back half. Smooth, rounded tannins build steadily on a very long, mineral- and spice-accented finish that leaves behind suggestions of mocha and allspice. 20% new oak.

Although this youthful Hermitage features extremely ripe blueberry and blackberry aromas, plus the imposing depth you expect for this famous appellation, it is remarkably open for a red wine with this kind of stature, and it already flows gracefully over the palate. Although there are plenty of tannins, they are very fine and even at the finish, with a restrained feel. From 40 to 60-year-old syrah vines. From biodynamically grown grapes.

Mostly sourced from les Murets, the 2020 Hermitage La Maison Bleue is a solid effort, with appealing notes of blackberries, raspberries and espresso on the nose. It's full-bodied and rich, yet streamlined and focused, with savory tones of black olives appearing on the softly dusty finish. It should drink well young, yet age well for more than a decade.  Looking at the two flagship Hermitage in barrel, the 2020 Hermitage La Maison Bleue comes mostly from the Les Murets lieu-dit, but there’s a splash from the Bessards as well. Classic Hermitage red and black fruits, crushed stone, new leather, and some bloody, iron-like notes emerge from this medium to full-bodied, nicely balanced, impressive effort that’s going to keep for 20 years or more.

A classy, fresh and aromatic display, this is harmonious already. Medium-bodied, with more measured fruit and freshness on the palate, fine tannins and plenty of them. The oak is well-integrated. It is slightly warming on the palate, but is otherwise well-balanced. Long finish.

Notes:

n the glass, the wine displays a deep, garnet color that hints at its intensity and depth. The nose is immediately enveloped in a symphony of aromas, with notes of blackberries, dark plums, and mocha taking center stage. Subtle hints of stones, bark, and grilled herbs add layers of complexity, while undertones of undergrowth lend an earthy and rustic character. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and exquisitely balanced. Fine tannins provide a silky texture, while a dense core of dark fruits adds depth and richness. Flavors of bitter chocolate, spices, and a touch of floral pastille further enhance the wine's complexity. The oak is well-integrated, offering subtle hints of vanilla and spice without overpowering the fruit. The Maison Bleue lingers on the palate with a long, satisfying finish. Its focused and precise nature is a testament to the winemaker's skill and attention to detail. While enjoyable now, this wine has the potential to age gracefully for more than a decade, allowing its flavors to evolve and mature over time.
