92 Points Wine & Spirits

The Aubrys work with some of Champagne’s old local varieties, including arbane, petit meslier, and fromenteau, which together make up five percent of this wine. A portion of the blend is chardonnay aged in used oak barrels (35 percent), and the balance is equal parts pinot noir and meunier. Half of the wine is from the 2017 vintage; the rest is a perpetual reserve that the brothers started in 1998. The flavors focus on red currants and green pear, red apples and wildflower honey, and though it might sound idiosyncratic, it all comes together in a way that sends a buzz of herbal acidity through the generous flavors, sparking their complexities.

92 Points James Suckling

A smooth, gently round and nicely balanced Champagne dominant in pinot meunier, pinot noir and chardonnay to boot. It has attractive lemon citrus flavors and is really punchy, refined and gently nutty. A smooth, pastry-like texture comes to the fore on the finish. Drink now.

Winemaker Notes:

Vinification of Aubry Brutis all in stainless steel tank. In addition, the malolactic is always encouraged, as the Aubrys feel that acidity is never lacking in the wines, and they would prefer to have slightly lower acidities and be able to use a very low dosage than have high acidities and be forced to dose the wines more.
