2007 Renard Syrah, Sonoma County
ONLY $12.99 a bottle
“The Sonoma bottling is a combination of experimental lots from Unti Vineyards (biodynamically grown) in Dry Creek and Kick Ranch (sustainably grown) in the Rincon Valley. The separate components complement each other with a cool climate and warm climate juxtaposition. The aromatics are tobacco, red leather licorice, orange peel, and yet there is a sweet dark fruit aspect with a persistent acidity. Likewise, the palate shows the bright fruit components and the natural berry acidity, but there is a juicy dark blackberry and lush plum/kirsch with a broad mid-palate and lovely integrated acidity that lengthens the finish. Cheers, and do not take wine too seriously.” Only 310 cases produced.

Owner, Winemaker, & Chief Bottle Washer
RENARD was founded by winemaker Bayard Fox, who derived the name of his winery from the French translation of his last name (“renard” means “fox” in English). Bayard “became enlightened and found Syrah” during a tour of the Rhône Valley in 1993, when he visited Chave, Rostaing, Voge, and Beaucastel through his connection with Tonnellerie Saury, the French cooperage that he represents. Bayard has been known to describe his Rhône-varietal wines as “a ballerina who has taken up kick-boxing, the tom-boy who doesn't mind getting a bit grubby, earthy, grounded, but is attractive, pretty, and alluring in expression.” He has discovered that the Syrah grape produces versatile yet unpredictable wines, with a remarkable ability to adapt from the cool climate of Sonoma Coast and Santa Barbara to the heat of a dry-farmed vineyard in Calistoga. All of Bayard’s wines are unique expressions of the sites where their grapes are sourced. Thus, most of his wines are single-vineyard designated.
